Augie's father initially attempted to teach him to bike ride by sending him down the large hill of their driveway. After falling, Augie vowed to never get back on a bicycle, so they tried a dirt bike instead. This was something Augie enjoyed and eventually entered the world of dirt bike racing at the age of five.
After two years racing dirt bikes, he moved onto karting at the age of seven. Part of what he enjoyed so much about karting was the fact that he didn't have something to fall off of every other lap. He also really enjoyed the competition, and still does to this day. When Augie first started karting, they didn't have to take it to a professional level. Eventually, as he aged through the ranks, things became more serious.
By 2013, Augie had placed 3rd in the SKUSA SuperNationals - S2 class championship. In 2014, he competed in the Rok Cup International at South Garda where he would demonstrate maximum talent by avoiding a major lap one incident. Ultimately, he would finish 17th in that race but hopes to race in Europe again one day.
Augie Lerch competed in the 2014 F1600 Series with Team Pelfrey. His expectations going into the season were top ten finishes and he managed to accomplish that in his first race where he finished 7th overall. He would see his first win two events later at the famous Mid-Ohio SportsCar Course during Race 2. Augie kept the pace from there and captured two more podiums (a 2nd and 3rd) during the finale at Watkins Glen International. Augie finished 3rd in the overall F1600 Series Championship.
"It was an absolute pleasure to have Augie in our team last year. His cool and calm exterior conceals a fire within that shows itself when the stakes are high. I am expecting big things from Augie as his career progresses."
Augie joined JAY Motorsports for the 2015 racing season and competed from Winterfest at NOLA and Barber until his first oval, at Lucas Oil Raceway.
By mid-season, even with support from additional resources, the development of the car was too far behind the rest of the pack. Moving forward, as he will not complete the 2015 season with JAY Motorsports in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Presented by Mazda,
Augie has both National and International racing prospects lined up for 2015.
Exploring Racing in the Dirt
In fall of 2015. Augie set out to try new and exciting forms of racing. September 18th saw him make his debut in the 2015 Sand Sport Super Show in Costa Mesa, CA. Racing against motorsport legends such as PJ Jones and Robby Gordon, Augie raced his way to a 3rd place finish in his first race in the Speed Energy Off-Road Truck Series Presented by Traxxas.
From there he moved on to racing in the Red Bull Global Rallycross Lites division. Entered in the season finale at Las Vegas, NV with upstart team Buhl Sport Detroit, Augie had to learn quickly how to master the car in a condensed two day race format. After practicing and qualifying in the dry, the skies opened up and poured down on the track. With a whole new racing surface to work with, Augie made his way into the LCQ,, qualified for the Final Main Race and brought the car home with a hard fought sixth place finish.
